POLITICS

Principles matter. Independent thinking matters.

Politics is not about parties to me. It is about people, principles and the future we leave behind for the next generation.

My journey into politics began because I became increasingly concerned about the direction our country was taking. Like many people, I found myself questioning whether those making decisions truly understood the concerns, values and priorities of ordinary people.

One of the things that motivated me to become involved was a desire to help secure a safe, prosperous and confident future for my daughter and granddaughter. I want future generations to grow up in a country that is secure, united and full of opportunity.

I believe in freedom of speech. A healthy democracy depends on people being able to express their views openly, even when those views are unpopular or challenge the prevailing consensus. Progress comes from debate, discussion and the free exchange of ideas.

I also believe that offence is often taken rather than given. People should be free to express their opinions without living in fear of causing offence simply because somebody disagrees with them. That does not mean being deliberately rude or unkind, but it does mean recognising that disagreement is a normal and healthy part of a free society. We do not all have to agree with one another, but we should be able to discuss difficult issues openly and respectfully.

I believe in equality under the law. Every person should be treated fairly and equally, regardless of background, status or political beliefs. The rule of law is one of the foundations of a free and democratic society.

I believe in democracy. Decisions should be made by the people and for the people. Public trust is strengthened when politicians listen, engage honestly and remain accountable to those they represent.

I believe in the United Kingdom, Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I believe our country has much to be proud of: our history, our institutions, our communities and the values that have shaped us over generations. I want to see a proud, sovereign and confident nation that is able to make its own decisions and determine its own future.

Above all, I believe independent thinking matters.

I have never been somebody who follows a crowd simply to fit in. I am naturally a deep thinker and a people person. I enjoy meeting people, hearing different perspectives and understanding what motivates them. I am also naturally a questioner and a problem solver, which means I tend to ask a lot of questions.

Some people are happy to accept things at face value. I have always preferred to dig a little deeper, understand the bigger picture and make up my own mind. I like to listen, reflect and think things through before reaching conclusions.

That does not mean I always get things right, but it does mean my views are genuinely my own.

I believe there is value in asking questions, challenging assumptions and being willing to think differently. Too often modern politics encourages people to choose sides and repeat what they are expected to say. I believe democracy is stronger when people think for themselves.

I would rather stand alone for something I believe is right than support something simply because it is popular or expected of me.

I have put that principle into practice myself. When I left Reform UK and joined Advance UK, I did so because it was the right decision for me based on my own beliefs and convictions. It would have been easier to stay where I was, but I have always believed that integrity matters more than convenience. If I believe something is right, I am prepared to stand by it, even when doing so is not the easiest option.

Politics should never be about blind loyalty. It should be about principles, honesty and doing what you genuinely believe is in the best interests of your community and your country.

Those are the values that guide me, both in public life and in everyday life.
