THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF LOYALTY

Loyalty is not about never questioning. It is about knowing where you stand when the storms arrive.

Loyalty is a word we hear a lot. In politics, in families, in friendships and in life generally. It is often spoken about as though it is a simple thing. Either you are loyal or you are not.

I have come to realise it is far more complicated than that.

There is blind loyalty. The kind that asks no questions and accepts everything without challenge. Some people admire it. Personally, I think it can be dangerous. We are all human. We all make mistakes. Following anyone without thinking for ourselves rarely ends well.

There is transactional loyalty. Loyalty that lasts only while it is convenient. As long as things are going well, people stand beside you. When things become difficult, they disappear. Most of us have encountered that kind of loyalty at some point in our lives.

Then there is earned loyalty.

Earned loyalty is built over time. It comes from honesty, trust and consistency. It grows when people show you who they are, not through grand gestures but through small actions repeated over and over again. It develops when words and actions match.

I think the strongest form of loyalty is constructive loyalty.

Constructive loyalty is not agreeing with someone all the time. It is not telling people what they want to hear. It is being honest enough to disagree when necessary whilst still wanting the best for them. It is having difficult conversations rather than walking away from them.

True loyalty is tested when things become uncomfortable.

It is easy to stand beside people when everything is going well. It is far harder when there are disagreements, uncertainty or difficult decisions to make. That is often when we discover whether loyalty is genuine or simply convenience dressed up as principle.

Over the years I have learned that loyalty and independent thinking are not opposites. In fact, I believe the strongest loyalty often comes from those who think for themselves.

They ask questions. They seek understanding. They challenge when needed. But once they have reached a conclusion, they stand by it.

For me, loyalty is not about following people blindly.

It is about trust that has been earned.

It is about shared values.

It is about honesty.

Most of all, it is about knowing where you stand when life becomes complicated.

That is when loyalty reveals what it truly is.
